NYYRC Joins Coalition Calling On Sen. Collins to Oppose Jackson’s Confirmation to SCOTUS

The New York Young Republican Club has signed onto a coalition letter sent to Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), urging her to vote against confirming Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson as a Supreme Court Justice.

Dear Senator Collins,

We write to strongly urge you to vote against Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. We know you pride yourself on being fair and consistent when vetting nominees.

We would ask that you consider the following concerning aspects of Judge Jackson’s record when making your decision on how to vote.

In recent weeks, there has been reporting from news outlets that Judge Jackson was zealous in defending Guantanamo Bay terrorists, some of whom helped murder United States citizens. According to these reports, she even “flirted with unsubstantiated left-wing theories” in her defense, raising questions as to whether her work was truly as disinterested as is now claimed.

Just a few days ago, your colleague Senator Josh Hawley also revealed that Judge Jackson has a troublesome record on crime, specifically when it comes to child predators. Going back to law school, Judge Jackson questioned making convicts register as sex offenders, claiming it could lead for sex offenders to be stigmatized and ostracized. While serving on the Sentencing Commission, Judge Jackson advocated for eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for child porn. According to Senator Hawley, “In the case of United States v. Hawkins, the sex offender had multiple images of child porn. He was over 18. The Sentencing Guidelines called for a sentence of up to 10 years. Judge Jackson sentenced the perpetrator to only 3 months in prison. Three months.”

And although we appreciate your willingness to give Senator Richard Durbin the benefit of the doubt in conducting a fair hearing, we cannot share your optimism, especially after his conduct during the confirmation process of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in which he smeared Kavanaugh’s character. On top of this, Sen. Durbin is currently blocking the release of key records which would reveal more information about Judge Jackson. This comes after Senate Democrats, including Sen. Durbin, demanded the release of millions of documents unrelated to Justice Kavanaugh’s time as a judge.

All of us were impressed and grateful for your rigorous review of then-Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial record, and the ridiculous allegations leveled against him. We ask you to review Judge Jackson’s record as thoroughly. We believe that if you review her record, you will come to the same conclusion as us: Judge Jackson should not be on the Supreme Court. We urge you to reject her nomination, as her views on crime and terrorism are deeply disturbing, and outside of the mainstream of judicial philosophy and legal guidelines. Sincerely,

Sincerely,

Gavin M. Wax
