About Zang: Zang Toi is a renowned Fashion Designer who has built a tradition of elegance for over 30 years. Coming from humble beginnings, Zang was born and raised in a small village, Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Malaysia. He was the youngest of seven children of a local grocer. Zang landed in New York City at the age of 20 where he studied at the distinguished Parsons School of Design. In August 1989, he opened his atelier and soon after, U.S Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour featured Zang in March 1990 issue and was one of the first Asian designers championed by the renowned editor. In 1990, Zang was awarded the Mouton Cadet Young Designer of the Year which recognizes the top, young, U.S. designer of the year. In a Newsday article published in 1991, Frank De Caro enthusiastically noted of the Malaysian-born designer and his success, “If anyone is THE NEXT BIG THING, it’s him.” (Newsday, New York, 29 April 1991).

Since that time, Zang’s work has been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Financial Times, etc. Not only has he dressed Hollywood celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, Kristie Alley, Joan Collin, Patti LaBelle, Mia Farrow, Eartha Kitt, Ivana Trump , Gong Li, Carol Alt, Marla Maples, Fran Drescher, Kelly Bensimon, Eva Longoria, Devon Aoki, Fergie (Black Eyed Peas) and Heather Graham, but has also created luxurious wardrobe for philanthropists and royalty including Melinda Gates and Saudi Princess Haifa Bandar Al Saud.

Along with his passion for glamorous fashion, Zang has been an avid supporter of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LIVESTRONG) and has raised over USD $700,000 to help in the effort in finding a cure for cancer. His was recognized by the foundation in 2008/2009 when he was presented with the Lance Armstrong Foundation Top Fundraiser Award.

Zang’s continued success was recognized by Vivid Magazine where he was named as one of the Top 8 most influential Chinese Americans (June-July 2011 issue).

Today, the world continues to recognize Zang’s passion for timeless beauty as he builds on a strong tradition of elegance.

Join the NYYRC for an exclusive Speakers Series featuring a delegation from Orania, South Africa! Hear from the Executive Head of the Orania Movement Joost Strydom, Dr. Ernst Roets, and other senior leaders of Orania, a remarkable, self-sustaining Afrikaner cultural community in South Africa.

Orania stands as a bulwark against the chaos, economic deprivation, and instability that each day drive South Africa closer to failed state status. South Africa’s decay is not a natural evolution; it is the result of a concerted effort of race-centric discriminatory laws that have robbed citizens of the public services and successful private enterprise that their nation had when it held the first general election under its current constitution in 1994.

The Afrikaner community has been subject to relentless attack by the African National Congress and other leftist political parties, which make no secret of their communist allegiances. Most recently, the ANC government implemented a law providing for “nil compensation” for seized property. They make no secret of their goals; they want to “kill the boer” and seize his farm. And kill the boer they do, with glee.

The Orania Movement stands in stark opposition to the destruction the ANC and its allies seek to inflict on the Afrikaner community. It seeks self-determination, and its members have proven their capacity to achieve success. They have been vilified in the press as a result.

We look forward to welcoming Joost Strydom, the Executive Head of the Orania Movement, and other members of his leadership team for their first public engagement in North America. The Orania team will be joined by Dr. Ernst Roets, who recently sat down with Tucker Carlson for an insightful interview.

As Tucker noted, South Africa is “what happens when you take DEI seriously.” It’s a sobering tale.

Tenement Museum: Family Owned

Amidst wars, depressions, and changing laws, family businesses served as the anchors of the community, but they had their costs. This tour spans the 75-year-old residential history of 97 Orchard, taking you to the 1870s century lager beer saloon and home of John and Caroline Schneider and the 1930s auction house of Max Marcus. This immersive and interactive tour starts with a visit to Schneider’s Saloon, which served food, beer, and entertainment, but also acted as a living room for German immigrants and families to socialize and a meeting place for local clubs and political organizations. You will also visit the Schneider’s bedroom at the back of the saloon; as they moved into 97 Orchard in 1864, it is the oldest apartment featured at the Tenement Museum. Then, you’ll travel forward in time to the Great Depression, where you’ll learn how Max Marcus made a living in an interactive multimedia exhibit in the space that once held his auction house.
