Assemblyman Lester Chang was elected to the New York State Assembly on November 8, 2022. The 49th Assembly District represents parts of Kings County. Lester, born in America to Chinese immigrant parents who came in pursuit of the American Dream, grew up on Eldridge Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Lester served in the Navy Reserve and New York Naval Militia. He is a war veteran and served a tour in Afghanistan and has 20 years management experience in global trade and logistics.

Persecution in South Africa is systemic, not incidental. Structural injustice requires structural reform.
In February 2026, a delegation from the New York Young Republican Club (NYYRC) traveled to South Africa, where we met with victims of farm attacks, individuals affected by racially discriminatory legislation, business leaders, and community institutions across the country. Their stories reveal a crisis that has persisted for decades—one memorialized by the White Cross Monument, a field of 3,000 white crosses, each bearing the name of a victim of a farm attack.
This September, the NYYRC and Lex Libertas are bringing the White Cross Monument to Washington, D.C., launching a coordinated international action plan to bring South Africa’s crisis to the attention of the United States government and the broader Western world.
On Saturday, September 26, 3,000 crosses will stretch across the National Mall alongside chilling firsthand accounts of violence, stories of resilience and victory, and the premiere of a new documentary chronicling this decades-long saga. It promises to be a historic moment—and an urgent call for the world to take notice.

About Commander Gregory K. Bovino:
Commander Greg Bovino has nearly three decades of experience leading complex border security, law enforcement, intelligence, and strategic operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security. His proven success directing large-scale organizations of more than 1,100 personnel, multimillion-dollar budgets, and mission-critical operations across land, coastal, and international borders have driven measurable improvements in security, operational effectiveness, employee engagement, and interagency collaboration.
He has been recognized for building high-performing teams, implementing innovative technologies and data-driven strategies, and forging strong partnerships with federal, state, local, international, and community stakeholders. His strong leadership has been over a variety of initiatives that significantly increased narcotics interdictions, reduced border fatalities and illegal crossings, strengthened counterintelligence capabilities, modernized enterprise operations, and fostered an inclusive culture of leadership and accountability throughout the organization.
Commander Bovino holds two master’s degrees; one in National Security Strategy from the National War College, and the other in Public Administration from Appalachian State University. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Natural Resources Management and Forestry from Western Carolina University. He also completed the Customs and Border Protection Leadership Institute in 2012 as well as the Department of Homeland Security’s Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program in 2016.

About Father Michael Barone:
A priest since 2008, Father Michael Barone provides ministry for the Office of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark while serving as the Chaplain for the Traditional Latin Mass Community of Jersey City, and has regularly celebrated and lectured on the Latin Mass in New York and New Jersey for over 18 years. A Knight of Ecclesiastical Grace in the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, Father holds Masters Degrees in Theology and Church History from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg MD, and Seton Hall University, as well as one in Archives and Public History from New York University. This panel is Father’s first opportunity to contribute to the NYYRC.
