Completely unknown to the American People, their government is funding the banishment of Orthodox Christians from the Ukraine. Since engorging itself on billions of American taxpayer dollars, the autocratic Zelensky Regime and its SSB secret police are concluding a years-long battle to spiritually ethnic cleanse their country. If Law No. 3894 is implemented, it will end the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) forever and replace it with a schismatic group that takes direct orders from the Zelensky Regime. The looming fate of the UOC must inspire Christians across the world to rise in defense of their Orthodox brethren and to stop Zelensky from implementing this law.
Few Americans are aware that, in August 2024, the Ukrainian government passed legislation outlawing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which until recently was the country’s dominant religion. Such harsh legislation could scarcely be believed in a free country, but Ukraine is not free, and this was neither the beginning nor the end of their persecution of the UOC. Since February 2022, over 1,500 UOC parishes have been seized by the government and handed to the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which few Orthodox patriarchates recognize. Law No. 3894 was passed in August of last year, but, now, the Zelensky Regime is preparing to do away with the UOC forever.
The Ukraine’s actions have been condemned by almost every human rights group on the planet; even left-wing NGOs that normally detest Christianity are raising an uproar. Human Rights Watch, the United Nations Human Rights Office, and a U.S. federal commission on religion freedoms condemned the Zelensky Regime. Pope Francis unequivocally stated that “no Christian church may be abolished directly or indirectly. The churches must not be touched.”
The New York Young Republican Club calls for swift federal action to block the spiritual ethnic cleansing of the Ukraine before it is too late. Volodmyr Zelensky cancelled elections, arrested and murdered his political opponents, and has taken billions of American tax dollars. Not content with this, he is spiritually colonizing millions of UOC Christians and forcing a new, unrecognized Church upon his people which is accountable not to God, but rather to his government, leaving the people out of communion with their brothers and sisters. Here, the United States Government must at last draw the line.
On the Senate Floor last April, then-Senator JD Vance condemned “the assault on traditional Christian communities” in the Ukraine and added that “you don’t deprive an entire religious community of their religious freedom because some of its adherents don’t agree with you about the relevant conflict of the day.” Now that he is Vice President of the United States, the time has come for him to back up his words with concrete actions.
As the Trump Administration negotiates an end to the conflict between the Russian Federation and the Ukraine, any deal between the parties must restore the UOC to its historic prominence and return civil and religious freedoms to the People of the Ukraine.
