New York Young Republican Club Hosts Foreign Policy Expert and Republican Candidates

The New York Young Republican Club will meet to host a foreign policy expert from the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations, and key Republican candidates, in this year and the next election, on October 18th at 7:00 P.M. at the Metropolitan Republican Club, located at 122 East 83rd street, between Lexington and Park Avenues.

The general meeting will be an interesting mix of speakers: Walter Russell Mead, a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and expert on U.S. foreign policy, Alan Skorski, who is seeking election to Congress in the 4th CD in Nassau County, and Nick Viest, who is seeking election to the City Council in Manhattan's Fourth Councilmatic District. All three guests will share their views and answer questions.

Walter Russell Mead has extensive experience as a researcher and as a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Opinion Page and Worth magazine. As a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, he studies United States Foreign Policy, international political economy, and Cuba. On April 22, 2001, the New York Times published Mr. Mead's opinion piece, "Why the World is Better for Jesse Helms," which described Mr. Helms as hated by "most of the foreign-policy establishment, but critical to the success of American foreign policy." More recently, on September 30, 2001, Mr. Mead published "The Economy: Strong Where It Counts," which explained his quiet confidence in the United States' and world's economy despite the market crash and the tragic events of September 11.

Alan Skorski is a successful small business owner who has made the Fourth Congressional District his home for the past ten years. The grandson of Holocaust victims, Mr. Skorski embraces the American rights and freedoms that made his family immigrate here after World War II. When he is elected to Congress, he plans to advocate tax cuts, a pro-family/pro-life program, school choice, and to oppose the Democrats' "patients bill of rights," which he believes is the first step towards socialized health care.

Nick Viest, a moderate Republican, has volunteered a great deal of time to the East Side Community, in addition to working in sales for a large paper distribution company. As President of the 19th Precinct Community Council, Mr. Viest works to preserve strong ties between the New York City Police Department and the East Side Community, and as Co-Chair of Community Board Eight's Public Safety Committee, he helps conduct meetings on pedestrian safety, parades, and other important safety concerns. Mr. Viest hopes to continue Mayor Giuliani's city-wide reforms by focusing on crime reduction, supporting charter schools, maximizing job growth by changing business regulation, and holding each government department accountable to meet measurable goals.

The New York Young Republican Club, Inc. is a political and social club for Republicans in New York City ages 18-40 and is officially recognized by the County, State and National Republican Party. Besides hosting relevant speakers such as Alan Skorski, Nick Viest, and Walter Russell Mead, candidates are promoted on the local, state and national levels. Active involvement in philanthropic, political and social activities is the foundation upon which this organization is built.
