It’s Official!

Judge Alito has been confirmed to the Supreme Court by a vote of 58-42.

Four Democrats crossed party lines to give Judge Alito a thumps up: Sens. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Kent Conrad of North Dakota. No surprise there, considering those states have become very conservative voting overwhelmingly for Bush in 2004.

None of those guys want to become the next Tom Daschle.

  • Victory! Women arrested for having abortions. States opening up the files of all the Republican women who’ve had abortions as minors, just to make sure they weren’t molested.

This is going to be fantastic. I can’t wait to see the hysteria and fear the left is planning to promote in months and years to come.

Now if we could just get one more conservative on the court and get this ball rolling.

(who can’t wait to make this an issue when American women realize some cross-eyed, sweaty, stuttering alpha male is controlling their personal reproductive rights).

  • Meghan,

If Armageddon doesn’t happen, will you consider becoming a Republican?

  • Any level-headed person will tell you that overturning Roe v. Wade is not like flipping a light switch on and off. Despite what the far left fears, and what the far right hopes, it is unlikely that abortion will ever be completely illegal in this country.

Even if the federal government were stripped of the power to interfere, reverting the power to back to the states where it belongs, current trends suggest that only about a dozen states might outlaw the practice entirely.

  • And the women in those states will be chained and locked up. Great PR. I can’t wait.

Who’s to say SCOTUS won’t deem the unborn fetus Constutitionally protected? Then it will be illegal in all states.

Learn the law and implications wonkers.

  • Like I said…”any level-headed person.”

  • Too bad Dobson, Falwell and Robertson aren’t level-headed.

  • Good point Rick.

I’ve always said outlawing abortion would have the same effect prohibition did in the 1920’s.

As a believer in free markets I feel that whether it’s drugs, alcohol, prostitution or abortion if there’s demand for it a market, whether black or legal will show up.

Based on that I think Roe v Wade shouldn’t be overturned. We don’t need speakeasy abortion clinics. However I would like to make sure that as a country we hold the line with abortion so that it doesn’t get to a point where we’re killing newborns minutes out of the womb because they might have a defect.

As crazy as it sounds partial birth abortion is a step in that direction.

  • Armegeddon Mr. Brownell. Nick and I agree on something.

As refreshing as it is to see a conservative take a pragmatic view on issues of choice, and while I do agree with the abhorrent nature of late-term abortions as described above, the issue is more nuanced and not so black and white as Republicans generally tend to view these issues.

I recommend you read this feature from the Boston Globe that puts a face on this delicate manner, in a family that is politically diverse yet ultimately united:

    My Late-Term Abortion
President Bush’s attempt to ban partial-birth abortions threatens all late-term procedures. But in my case, everyone said it was the right thing to do — even my Catholic father and Republican father-in-law.

  • Meghan,

As suggested I read the article and I completely agree with you that the situation is not so black and white. I think when you start getting into the late term abortion conversation you don’t need to be democrat or republican to think of all the possible situations that could arrive as consequences of one or the other.

As a parent who’s sat through sonograms, seen the pictures and felt the kicking, I can understand why people go crazy over later term abortions. I also can understand when a woman’s health is at risk and her making the decision to save her own life.

That though brings up one of those questions. If you start making exceptions for health reasons whether it’s the baby’s or moms what are the chances that you can’t find a rogue doctor willing to sign off and say, “yeah there was a risk”, just for the sake of getting paid. It could end up being a useless piece of legislation. It’s like you have to be 21 to drink. Yeah because we all know kids don’t get around that one everyday.

As far as this particular article, what bothered me is the fact the late term abortion was not because the mom was sick but because the baby “might” not make it and if it did it wouldn’t enjoy its life. Aren’t you worried that this is a form of natural selection where only the strongest and fittest has a right to be born? From a liberal like you, I’m surprised you would be in support of something so elitist and smacking of Nazi Germany. Where do you draw the line? How about Down syndrome, should we abort them? I have a friend of the family who has two grandchildren with Down syndrome and they wouldn’t trade those kids in for all the money in the world. However I’m sure there are parents who would have took the easy road and said, “its better for the child”.

My concern is not the present but the future trend such things start.

  • It wouldn’t be my choice, but it’s not my choice to make for other people.

  • The whole thing just makes me laugh.

People on the left are so concerned with how some poor little cow is being treated and the pain they feel before they’re slaughtered for my dinner. But some baby 7 months into its gestation period where it could actually survive if born, they don’t care about its skull being punctured and brain sucked out and the pain it might feel!
