Governor Tim Kaine will be giving the Dems response to the Prez’s address tonight. That’s right, one month in to his first term Virginian Kaine will be giving the speech seen (though I like many I imagine, don’t intend on having the sound on) by millions of Americans. Could one ask for a better depiction of the dearth of leadership on the issues most important to the American people offered by the opposition party? What will Kaine speak to? Alleviating traffic on the Beltway?One could willingly get sucked into the faux intrigue I suppose: Is this a way for Dems to highlight former Gov and ’08 wannabe Mark Warner? A slight to Hillary? to Kerry? (hey, his fax machine still works from Switzerland) What, exactly, are they up to?
Absolutely nothing. Cindy Sheehan is the face of the Democrats and even they aren’t stupid enough to give her a prime time microphone. They are adrift, a few months from being electorally slammed yet again by a second term President that is the personification of Evil one moment, and too stupid to know which fork is for what the next.
And Mr. Justice Alito will be there, seated with his colleagues on the nation’s highest court tonight. Sweet stuff.

Actually, thanks Hil. A full-court press of several months by your media allies intended to convince America of your centrism, your moderation, your ability to play well with others hits the can after 30 seconds of you opening your friggin mouth and vibrating those lovely vocal chords of yours. I know it doesn’t matter much to your supporters, they agree; or to the press, as accurately reporting on your alternatively shrill and soulless comments would require actually listening to you and doesn’t fit the template of Bold Spirited Run for ’08 by Smartest Woman in America; but to us, your sensible opposition, our resolve stiffens even as the rest of us within earshot cringes.

Unlike the Sharpton-Baron ugliness, I was fortunate enough to attend the CORE King Holiday “Living the Dream” Celebration where citizens gathered to recognise honest progress with an optimistic determination to face existing problems and better our country; booed Belafonte’s most recent loathsome comments ; and honored, among others, Ambassador Bolton, Governor Barbour and the citizens of Mississippi (BTW, the Guv currently owns Most Unabashed Accent: I love how he can get “Mississippi” done in two syllables while “flood” requires four!), and Usher (! huge with the Kids I’m told, and looks about 12 himself).

Among the most annoyingly abused phrases in our lexicon, perhaps topped only by “for the children”, but it’s nice that for a couple of days a year, we fat, dumb, happy Americans can fake it.
I bet they’re asleep in New York. I bet they’re asleep all over America. And while knowing December 7, 1941 as the Day that will live in infamy, the Day the Sleeping Giant awoke IS important (despite the assertion of Floridian Brinsley Elliot, who better be hot), it is most vital that an essential lesson, aptly summarized by Prez Reagan, of course, is learned: History teaches that wars begin when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap.

The idea that we’re going to win Independence from Mother England is an idea which is just plain wrong- Loyalist Jedediah Dean, June 1781, a few months before the British surrender at Yorktown.

The idea that we’re going to win this war and preserve the Union is an idea which is just plain wrong - Democrat Alexander Dean Howard, August 1864, a few weeks before the fall of Atlanta.

The idea that we’re going to win the war in Europe while simultaneously emerging victorious over Imperial Japan is an idea which is just plain wrong- Professor Andree Dean Brush, September 1944.

Last night my friend Kimberly and I, on the urging of a loopy art-school friend of ours,reluctantly went to the Guggenheim museum to take in some performance art. Now that rather justly maligned term is to me another way to refer to the act of conning someone into underwriting bad pretentious entertainment or one’s excuse for inappropiate behavior that I wish I hadn’t been too drunk to employ in College. But hey, what the hell, oftentimes it’s good for a laugh. And yes, you artsy types, I get it, I get the metaphors and I even think there is often a need for your nuttiness and God bless ya, keep it up!
Anyway, last night’s performance (beware: nudity on link)- Seedbed was part of a seven night series where each night the ahem, artist “reenacts and interprets seminal performance works from her peers dating from the 60s and ’70s.” Seven Easy Pieces is dedicated to Susan Sontag. Perfect.

I can’t do it justice: (from the program) My aids are the visitors to the gallery-in my seclusion, I can have private images of them, talk to myself about them: my fantasies about them can excite me, enthuse me to sustain-to resume- my private sexual activity. [For six hours!]

My impressions? Well, going in wasn’t anticipating much, then became curious, curious,heard her voice, couldn’t make out what she was saying, got closer, could hear clearly, became intrigued, interested, interested, interested, compelled, then a bit bored, had a cigarette, thought there would be nothing else, nothing new, got closer, curious, piqued, focused, interested, interested. Finished only marginally satisfied and mostly wanting more.

Item: 2005 Elections spell bad news for Bush, Right-Wing Republicans
Think of all potential combinations of results and this will be the gist of tomorrow headlines and “analyses.” They (today’s elections) in fact mean…practically nothing for the national picture.

Virginia may mean something to George Allen’s national ambitions, however. A Kilgore loss comes with a diminishment of the junior senator’s prestige. Then again, a Kaine win along with an exiting Democrat governor with high approval ratings makes Allen’s past victories all the more impressive.
