Tuesday’s tragic plane crash in Tehran, which killed a number of journalists being transported to view naval exercises, is being blamed on the United States by Iranian officials. This military plane, which was a U.S.-made Lockheed C-130, crashed into a building after experienceing trouble on takeoff, killing all 94 aboard and 21 in the building and on the ground. But this is all our fault for two reasons: 1. everything is our fault. 2. U.S.-led sanctions against Iran have deprived them of... Read More→

Bloomberg’s campaign bill

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (3)

The tab has now become public. Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially spent $77,894,878 on his reelection campaign. That averages out to $103 per voter according to folks who have a lot more patience to do the math than I do. Bloomberg’s hapless opponent Freddy Ferrer spent $9 million and got trounced by 20 points. Did Bloomberg need to spend that much money to beat a thoroughly flummoxed candidate who probably needed a crib sheet to find his way out of the voting booth? Probably not. Did money... Read More→

A Note on Moral Eqivalency

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (1)

Last night at the Ashcroft event, there were a number of folks protesting against the death penalty in the United States, and lately the topic has risen to the top of the public debate. Before 2005 ends, this country will have reached the media-imposed benchmark of 1,000 executions since the Supreme Court allowed the resumption of the death penalty with the death by firing squad of murderer Gary Gilmore in 1977. Amnesty International, the United Nations, our fair weather friends across the Atlantic,... Read More→

To second Nick’s comments, I have to say that it was certainly a treat to hear John Ashcroft speak last night in that bastion of liberal nonthink a.k.a. Columbia University. The atmosphere of Roone Arledge Hall was charged by the group of protestors in the peanut gallery whose contributions were meant to disrupt the proceedings, but really only served to embarrass them as a whole. They were there to rail against everything they could – from pleading to save Tookie Williams (they can’t)... Read More→

New York GOP on the Fast Track

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (1)

The 62 New York State Republican county chairmen are going to be making endorsements for Governor and U.S. Senate candidates on December 12, according to State Republican Chairman Stephen Minarik. Seems a bit early out in front of the 2006 race, but there are many among us who have grumbled in the past about how the NYS GOP often finds itself behind the 8-Ball because it brings its candidates to the floor too late. And it’s a justifiable grievance. Just remember, this doesn’t seal the... Read More→

Alito on the Merits

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (0)

Like with any Supreme Court nominee put forth by a Republican administration, the Democrats would have us believe that Judge Samuel Alito is another in a long line of conservative judges who would approach the Constitution with a paper shredder tucked under his arm. This article from Tech Central Station gives some insight into the true nature of Alito’s decisions on some key Fourth Amendment issues. I encourage you to pass this on to anyone you know who opposes Alito’s nomination.  Read More →

No worries there. I like softball just as much as the next person. The real X factor in regards to whether South Korea would accept the reintroduction of nuclear weapons on its territory is China. It is China that supposedly is steering North Korea toward the bargaining table with an eye toward nuclear disarmament. It is China’s grand economic and strategic ambitions that sends a shudder down the spine of every nation in Asia, and it is China that motivates the strategic maneuvers of every... Read More→

Peaceful Korean reunification has been a subject of well-thought debate within North & South Korea for a lot longer than we here in America realize. Since the early 1980s, when North Korean leader Kim Il Sung renounced violence as a method of reuniting with the South, baby steps have been made between the two nations toward that goal. With the death of the elder Kim in 1994, reunification efforts have been a bit topsy-turvy thanks to his son and successor Kim Jung Il, who is by all accounts... Read More→

Re: Something to Think About

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (0)

Nick, you bring up some interesting points upon reflection of the American public’s intestinal fortitude in these rocky modern times. However, I’m more optimistic in my view of what our country can handle. I don’t think what we are witnessing in the falloff of public support for the war in Iraq is a failure of the American people to “handle it,” so to speak. Ours is a nation made of people who possess a moral strength and character unlike any ever seen in history, and that strength has... Read More→

Cry Me A River

Posted by: Rick Brownell | Comments (1)

Doug Forrester is now blaming President Bush’s recent low popularity for his loss to Jon Corzine last week for NJ gov. “If Bush’s numbers were where they were a year ago, or even six months ago, I think we would have won on Tuesday,” Forrester told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. This strikes me as a bit infantile. Doug ran probably the best campaign he could, but it just wasn’t good enough. Them’s the breaks. Trying to slough off his loss by heaping blame on the... Read More→
