Embryonic Stem Cell Research (ESCR) has become one of the hot-button issues of the mid-term elections (I, personally, am ambivalent on the issue, my only concern is that low-income women may be exploited for their eggs). The Democrats have been exploiting this issue by making promises the ESCR will provide cures for a number of debilitating diseases, with little evidence to support this, and falsely making it seem that the Bush administration has banned research, rather than just limiting federal... Read More→

Really? Schumer co-wrote this?

Posted by: jsaunders | Comments (2)

Almost fell out of my chair when I saw who co-authored this piece in The Wall Street Journal calling for less regulation in the US financial markets to keep NY competitive on the global market. Bloomberg is a businessman, so his stance is no surprise, but Schumer? It’s nice to see a Democrat openly stand-up for corporate America. They even bring up making it harder to file frivolous shareholder lawsuits. It should be interesting to see if his party turns on him like they turned on Lieberman. I... Read More→

Crain’s New York Business is polling readers on whether or not Hevesi should resign: “A majority — 66% — of over 400 people who have responded to the poll so far think the comptroller should lose his job, saying he broke the law and should be punished.”  Read More →

The state Ethics Commission found that State Comptroller Alan Hevesi violated state law by using a government staffer to chauffer his wife – apparently they found the reimbursement he gave after his Republican opponent Chris Callaghan revealed his inappropriate use of funds too little, too late. Let’s hope the NY voters will hold Hevesi accountable for his inexcusable behavior. Update: The New York Sun has all the gritty details and suggests Hevesi may have no choice but to resign.  Read More →

The front page of the Wall Street Journal Today features my college club, the Berkeley College Republicans. People don’t generally associate Republicans with the ultra-liberal UC Berkeley, but the BCRs have grown to become one of the largest student groups at Cal, and now boast more numbers than the Cal Dems. Conservative students may be outnumbered by liberals there, but someone has to hold the counter-protests! On another note, Cal has scored a #10 BCS ranking and takes on Washington this... Read More→

The Economist Gives Me Hope

Posted by: jsaunders | Comments (0)

Two articles in the latest edition of The Economist this agnostic, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, anti-god-in-public schools Republican found uplifting: The Economist’s Lexington column this week muses on the myth of the conservative Christian values voter – among his points: terrorism and Iraq were of concern to more voters than values, some conservative Christian demographics are more likely to vote Democrat and 22% of conservative Christians are pro-choice. Another article in this week’s... Read More→

Bloomberg’s Novel New Plan

Posted by: jsaunders | Comments (2)

Bloomberg announced a new plan to help allay poverty by offering cash incentives for people who take positive steps to improve their education or the health of their children. Details of the plan have yet to be released, but similar programs have shown promise in Mexico and Brazil. I like what Bloomberg had to say on the issue:“Long experience has taught us that simply throwing dollars at poverty does not make it go away. We’ve learned that lesson. We will target our resources, closely... Read More→
