Ah, Berkeley…
Posted by: | CommentsAt the University of California, Berkeley, the hippie heyday is long past. For more than a year now, a group of activists has been living in a grove of trees in protest of a planned fitness center expansion, despite the fact that UCB is going to plant three trees for every tree it takes down. But unlike the takeover of People’s Park in the 60s, this protest has minimal student involvement and support. Hopefully, a county judge will soon rule to have the activists removed from the trees. The teacher’s union is a powerful lobby, but hopefully as more and more of these programs help poor families secure a better education for their children and word spreads of their success, more families will gain access to alternatives to failing public schools. Absolut Reclaims Southwest US for Mexico
Posted by: | CommentsAbsolut Vodka has redrawn the US-Mexico border in an ad running in Mexico. Absolut defended the ad on the corporate blog:“Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US — that ad might have been very different.” A company that is dialed into Web 2.0 enough to have a blog should realize that you can’t place an ad in one country that may be offensive to another and not expect that ad to come back to haunt you. Seriously, did they think that Mexico doesn’t have internet access or... Read More→
The NY Post editorial page calls for an end to the practice of member items following the revelation that Quinn was funneling ‘rainy day’ money to fictitious charity groups. If there is a strong case for having a slush fund for emergencies, why not lobby harder for it, bring it to the press, get public opinion on your side? If they had to hide it, they clearly didn’t have a strong enough case to do it. Let’s hope that Ted Stevens doesn’t figure out a way to transfer this practice over... Read More→
