Support NY Young Republican Ryan Brumberg for Congress

By William P.

I received this campaign update from my friend Ryan Brumberg, who is running in New York’s 14th Congressional District.  Ryan is an excellent candidate who would bring responsibility and fiscal sobriety to Washington during a time when it is most needed!  Please see the end of the post for information on how to volunteer and donate to Ryan’s campaign.

Dear Friends,

I write to you to let you know as of last Friday, April 9th, 2010, I have resigned from McKinsey & Company to run for the U.S. House of Representatives for New York’s 14th congressional district. This covers the east side of Manhattan and parts of Queens.

I am running to restore the central importance of facts and reason in governance, to fix the economy and create new jobs, and to prevent Washington from driving our country into bankruptcy. I am running as a socially liberal, fiscally conservative Republican.

During my career at McKinsey, we solved difficult problems for the worlds largest companies. We used facts and reason to analyze what was wrong, then we figured out how to fix it. In contrast, Washington appears to address issues primarily through the lenses of politics and emotion. A lot of ideas sound good on paper, but when their costs and consequences are tallied up, they do not work.Washington needs to understand this.

I learned enormously from my time at McKinsey. However, as I have watched events unfold on the national stage, I have begun to worry. In just the past few weeks we’ve seen the chance for smart and targeted banking regulation evaporate, watched bond markets decide Berkshire Hathaway is less risky than U.S. Treasuries, and witnessed Democrats and Republicans squander an opportunity for real reform in the health care industry—all the while 1 in 5 New Yorkers not find jobs, are underemployed, or have simply given up!

Given Congress’s unwillingness or inability to effect the necessary change, I have decided that I can no longer remain on the sidelines as our nation spirals toward bankruptcy. The economic and fiscal state of our country is too precarious to allow politics to drive policy. Washington needs to start using a fact-based approach to solve the problems facing our nation. We need smarter government. We need Smart Change.

To win this campaign, I need your help. If you or anyone you know can volunteer for the campaign, host a fundraiser, or donate to the effort, please contact me at ryan@brumberg2010.com.  You can see my website www.brumberg2010.com and my Facebook group Brumberg 2010 for more details.
