Navy to Commission George HW Bush Aircraft Carrier
ByThe U.S. Navy will commission the George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), its latest Nimitz class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, this Saturday, January 10, 2009.
This latest addition to our fleet is the 8th aircraft carrier to be named after a U.S. president. Two were named after Democrats; the John F. Kennedy was decommissioned in 2007, and the Harry S. Truman is still in service. Five of the remaining 6 are named after Republicans: Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt, Lincoln, Reagan, and now Bush. The USS George Washington honors our only president to stand above political faction.
