Word on the Street — New Youth Outreach Coordinator?
ByFellow YRs… Word on the street is Chairman Mondello is making former Councilman Andrew Eristoff (and former McCain Manhattan coordinator) the new Youth Outreach Coordinator for the NYGOP…
Any thoughts?
*Clarification-After speaking with Andrew directly, I’m happy to report that he has been asked to Chair a Committee to take a look at the entire State of the State GOP. From a personal point of view, I’m happy to hear it. Andrew has been a large supporter of the YRs and will undoubtedly continue to do so. Stay tuned folks!!!

Why would they choose a GOP Youth Coordinator who is middle-aged? That is a bad, bad idea and completely defeats the purpose of getting youth involved. If they want youth involved, they need someone under-40 who can actually relate to young voters. Though I suppose the powers that be in the NY GOP are all senior citizens, so to them someone middle-aged probably is a “youth”. If they pick him, it would be emblematic of why the NY GOP continues to decline.
It is also imperative that whoever they pick knows how to take advantage of new media, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that had not even occurred to them.

Did they even ask for input from the YR and CR organizations in the state? Their leaders and former leaders would be a good pool of candidates to look at and at the very least would have good recommendations. After all, they are the ones plugged into the youth and young adult GOPers.

That would make the most sense and would be the best place to look, but I doubt it.
I think that it is up to the YRs and CRs to spread the word ourselves rather than rely on antiquated party leadership, which is why we are implementing a plan for 2009 to spread our message through new and traditional media.

I liked what I saw of the guy, though I’m not sure he’s the best candidate for youth to rally around.

Excellent question, and I have an answer, NO. As Vice Chair of the NYSYR, I can say that we were not asked. As President of the NYYRC, I was certainly not asked.

It seems that this was probably more about payback for his position as McCain Manhattan coordinator than actual thought as to who would be best for the position.

Not sure Jen… I think it may have something to do his desire to run for NYGOP Chairman…
He and Phil and the McCain Manhattan folks did a great job and I know many of us enjoyed working with him.

I like Mr. Eristoff a lot and he is a valuable GOP leader, but shouldn’t someone young be the GOP Youth Coordinator? Wouldn’t Mr. Eristoff be better matched in another job?
Otherwise, isn’t that like having a white guy such as me be the minority outreach coordinator?

Agreed, they did do a great job, and I think that NY GOP Chairman would be a much more appropriate position for Andrew.

With all due respect, I think Andrew and the McCain Manhattan team did a great job during the campaign. However, this has nothing to do with Andrew personally. It has everything to do with Joe Mondello’s myopic view for the future of the party in this state. Andrew’s probably the youngest guy Joe Mondello knows and given his recent efforts, he will be rewarded. It’s not a question of capability, per se, it’s Party Politics 101.
Again, hats off to not party building in this state. Everyone is sitting in the fog at the top of the mountain without a clue as to what’s going on down below.
Case in point: Has anyone seen the short list to replace Clinton in the Senate? Even if it had just one name on it, it would be longer than our bench.
Attention to those who unfortunately underscore the “Old” in Grand Old Party: There are HUNDREDS of young, energized individuals right here in New York City who will not let this party die with you, who are ready to help lead this party in the direction it should be headed in. Wake up, all you out of touch Rip Van Winkles. The Rockefellers are not the first name in Republican politics in NY State anymore, nor have they been for a very, very long time.
On second thought, go back to sleep and let the real Youth take control of coordinating our own. I think we’re doing a pretty good job so far….

As always Gail, well said! We here in Manhattan, as well as across NYS KNOW how to build. We’ve been doing without the NYGOP for years and will continue to do so. W ehave the template, we created the model and will continue to thrive. Maybe one day they’ll see that we know what’s going on.

Check this out – the MI GOP chair – Saul Anuzis – is not only on Twitter, he’s live-Tweeting a national GOP meeting right now. http://twitter.com/sanuzis
That is what we need in NY – someone that knows how to reach out to engage the base and reach younger voters on their turf.

You have the facts slightly confused. Chairman Mondello is forming a commission on the NYS party’s future. You should expect some YRs to be asked to participate, but youth outreach will not be the sole focus.
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Interesting, suddenly old man Mondello is planning on putting together a commission that will include some YRs. Apparently someone is listening.
So does this mean that Eristoff will not be appointed Youth Outreach Coordinator and that they will choose someone that does not have gray hair?

According to the New York Daily News, we did have our facts straight:

Anon 5:59PM… Regardless if our facts could potentially be wrong, because it would be detrimental to hear that the Largest and most active Young Republican Club in the country would not be included on such talks. There are great folks working hard at State Committee day and night to ensure that this party gets back on the proper track. I believe that and many of us do, but we feel it’s absolutely wrong that the Chairman not have YRs involved in the Rebuilding of our Party. It can’t be the party of pinstripes and pearls anymore.

The Daily News item came from your blog … circular [mis]information!

[Mis]information from multiple sources, kinda tough to “misinform”. Lord knows we’re not the only ones chatting about this.

Regardless of who would be appointed to such a role, I’m not sure I see a value in an “youth outreach coordinator” position. We already have a statewide Young Republican infrastructure affiliated with the state GOP. That state YR organization has a proven track record. Don’t reinvent the wheel, use the premium product you already have.
