The Future of Guantanamo

By Rick Brownell

President-Elect Obama plans to close Camp X-Ray at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at his earliest opportunity. This is not so simple a task. What do you do with those awaiting trial? Under what court system can you try them? If you plan on bringing them stateside (Dumb, dumb, dumb), then how will you guarantee security while they await trial? Et cetera and so on.

There are more legal issues than I can comprehend, but I do know that we need to remember 2 very important things about this situation:

1. The detainees are not U.S. citizens, they are in fact enemy combatants who wish us all dead and have actively tried to carry out that wish.
2. We are at war. This should not be treated like some protracted episode of “Law & Order.”

It's the end of the post, now what?

How do you know that any of these people want us dead? I'm sure there are some there but all? How do you know? Where is your proof? I hope you get arrested, detained, and beaten and then we shall see if you still have the same closed minded view of this situation.

What if our soldiers were treated the same? No crime committed yet locked up and tortured?

Sad that you think this way. I would pray for you but that would be a waste of time.

I know this is a truly biased, fact twisting blog so none on my logic will ever be posted. Good luck with your narrow, simpleton view of the world.

Actually, posting your comments (unless they contain foul language) is exactly what we want to do. We don’t twist facts, we post facts and offer our opinions. There are some in our political discourse who don’t like debate, but that can never be said about this blog or this organization. An open dialogue is what is needed now more than ever. Apparently, though, you don’t agree because you would rather see me arrested and beaten than exchange opposing viewpoints on this issue. But, by all means, keep the posts coming Mr.(or Ms.) Diplomat.
