Hillary and her low expectations for America

By nvertucci

Today in front of the UAW, Hillary Clinton claimed President Bush was the reason manufacturing was moving offshore because it has nothing to do with 200 years of economic thought. Has Hillary ever read Adam Smith or David Ricardo?

She went on to say that the only way for manufacturing workers to protect their jobs was to elect Democrats.

I guess that might be true if you want America to be the capital of t-shirt manufacturing. Yeah, the hell with following the recommendation of CEO’s and now the president with getting kids to become engineers to fill all the high-tech, high paying jobs in this country that we currently have to give out visas to foreigners to fill. We want to make sweat socks!

The U.S. currently has a huge shortage of Registered Nurses (average starting annual salary of $55K)and Pharmacists (average starting annual salary of $85K) and many other healthcare professionals. We are increasingly relying on foreign grads to fills these jobs. There are even fast-track visa programs for qualified aliens to apply for to fill these jobs. We need to focus on math and sciences so that more Americans can find employment in these essential and well paying fields. Even if we increase the number of US high school students interested in studying to enter these fields, we don’t have enough programs to graduate suffient numbers. Therefore, we also need to focus on creating more programs to train healthcare professionals. Especially as our population ages and lives longer, we need more healthcare professionals to satisfy the growing demand for their services. Math and science need to have a greater focus in our educational system.

With respect to my earlier comment, I would like to say that I am in favor of foreign workers coming to our country, as my prents did, to fill these much needed areas. However, if the complaint is that Americans are losing out in the workforce, then I suggest that we take a look at the high-paying fields in which American workers can find gainful employment and focus on training our workforce to fill those areas. We know that our students are not excelling in math and science at the same rate as children of some other nations. It’s something to think about. If our workforce is skilled and trained to fill shortages in the healthcare field and the sciences, then the fact that some manufacturing jobs or unskilled labor jobs go overseas will not have the same impact on our workforce.
