My Early Morning Election Day Thoughts
ByWell as I always do on Election Day I went to my local polling station and voted early in the morning before I headed to work. The most shocking thing was that as I checked in at 8:00 am I was the 10th person in my district (58th) to vote. 10th!! An hour and a half into voting and I was only number 10!
If what appears to be happening in my station takes place across the rest of the city, Republicans have a good chance of stealing some seats in the council particularly Patrick, Joel and Russo. There is no doubt that both Democrats and Republicans will both stay home thinking Bloomberg has it in the bag but I think Democrats will stay home more. I will venture to guess in these situations when the result is basically known Republicans will come out more to vote for the sake of knowing it’s our patriotic duty giving us an edge in all the other races.
I still can’t believe I was only number 10!

I share your optimism. Just keep in mind that if the only contested election in your district is the mayor’s race, then that will affect turnout as well. And like you said, the Bloomberg factor is likely to have some effect on turnout.
For what it’s worth, the city council seat in my district (Dennis Gallagher, Republican thankyouverymuch) is uncontested, and I was number 17 at 7:00am.
But I was never much of an exit poll kinda guy myself. It’s like peeking at your presents before Christmas morning. In just twelve short hours, we’ll start getting the answers to our questions.

My district actually had a number of contested seats as well as the Queens Borough President race. Lets also not forget that Prop 1 is a big issue and people should come out just for that. I mentioned only being number 10 because normal when I go vote at 8:00am I’m in the 30’s.

True, Prop 1 is important, but this ain’t California. Maybe this year, you’re just ahead of the curve.
